Despite his name, Death is actually a very likeable character in his interactions with other characters all are delivered with stellar voice acting, resulting in some very amusing exchanges. But I'm perfectly okay with my opinion being the minority if it leads to more well-designed female protagonists in the future.The game stars Death (who looks like a cross between He-Man’s Skeletor and Casey Jones from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I think there's more of an argument to be made if someone like Lara Croft was running around in heels in a realistic setting versus the Darksiders' more fantastical world. To me, nothing about Fury's design (except for maybe her bare arms) screams sexualization. I have a coworker who wears heels all the time because she feels uncomfortable in flats and likes walking around in heels because it gives her extra height so she can see eye to eye with other people - there's nothing sexual about that. In fact there's probably a discussion to be had on whether it's the male gaze that is sexualizing women wearing heels in the first place. Most women wear heels (to some degree) and while I get that there's a form of "stripper heels" that are ridiculous, in general a lot of women's footwear have heels and so I don't think they're inherently sexual. Maybe I'm just weird, but I don't find heels to be sexualized. In fact, I think it is great to get to discuss the intricacies of it, in the same way I would about any elements of art, design, or creative expression. My excitement is not at all dampened by the concerns expressed by others about Fury's attire. I think it is entirely possible to discuss this topic without any disingenuous complaining about how a feminist criticism of her design is off limits even though I like the way she looks and the trailer has me very excited. I don't feel upset that people have differing views on this. But that is what appeals to me and I am comfortable with my own opinion and the opinions of those who disagree with me. Personally, I feel like she is just the right amounts of sexy and cool and tough in her appearance and demeanor. I don't mind them aesthetically though I understand and appreciate that others will have a different point of view in that regard. I like the overall look of her despite the details.Īlso, I acknowledge that the heels are a needless touch to the design which comes from a male-centric perspective. On the other hand, her face, hair, and general attitude all seem really cool. I think Fury's outfit is kinda boring and doesn't have some of the more outlandishly creative elements that I like in Joe Mad's work.
